3rd Grade Calacas

In 3rd Grade we learned about the most important celebration of the year in Mexico. Celebrated on the Catholic holy days of November 1st (All Saint's Day) and November 2nd (all Soul's Day). This occasion is a joyful time of remembrance, family reunion, and feasting as relatives and friends gather together to honor their loved ones who have passed away.

Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions about this holiday:
-It is not the Mexican version of Halloween.
-It is a Catholic ritual intermixed with folk culture and going to mass is an essential aspect of this celebration.
-It doesn't honor death, but our relatives who have passed away. During this time, we welcome the opportunity to reflect upon our lives, our heritage, our ancestors and the meaning and purpose of our own existence.
-Altars are not for worshiping but for offering our love and remembering our departed family members.
-It's about LOVE not FEAR.

Please enjoy the images below from our 3rd grade class and their Calacas...
