4th Grade Backyard Habitats

The idea for this lesson plan was brought about by my disgust for my backyard. It is currently, in all honesty, a mess. The previous homeowner had no restraint when it came to planting grasses, bushes and plants. So I now face the overwhelming task of bringing order to this botanical chaos. But I must admit that the yard is popular with the local wildlife. I enjoy the company of animals and I enjoy feeding them and providing them with all things necessary to continue their circle of life. I also enjoy watching television shows about animals so it was my great fortune to come across a show that airs on Animal Planet called Backyard Habitats. I have only seen it a few times and thought that it was a great concept for people out there like me wanting to create an eco-friendly backyard. I did a little research online and found that there is really a program out there that supports backyard habitats and will come to certify your yard if it meets the code.

So, I decided to bring this to my classroom and have the students create a backyard habitat using the dimensions of my own personal backyard.

The students learn a good lesson because they become more aware of the environment around them. It teaches them research skills so that they take into consideration which plants and trees offer suitable benefits so that the animals will have food and shelter. It also allows students to recognize the importance of a clean source of water.

Considering the hard work the students put into this project, I would like to submit the most effective eco-friendly design to the Backyard Habitat television show.
